MUAY THAI GLOVES

Muay Thai is a combat sport from Thailand that is also known as "The Art of Eight Limbs". It is a striking-based martial art that utilizes punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes to strike the opponent.

Training in Muay Thai typically includes a combination of techniques drilling, pad work, bag work, and sparring. It is also common for Muay Thai fighters to engage in a significant amount of cardiovascular and strength training to improve their stamina and power.

What Makes Muay Thai Gloves Different?

While they look similar to boxing gloves, Muay Thai Sparring Gloves are designed for Muay Thai, and are wholly considered to be distinct from standard Boxing gloves. They typically have shorter wrists, allowing for flexibility with some Muay Thai techniques, such as clinching. They typically have a lot more padding on the backhand for blocks and parries, and are overall seen to be more compact.

Glove Size and Weight

The ideal weight for sparring gloves, similar to boxing gloves. Largely, you can rely on the following estimates, but glove sizes are often one size fits all/most, with an exception for kids gloves. Glove weights range between 8oz to 18oz.

The most common range is the 10oz to 16oz range, with 10oz and 12oz Muay Thai Gloves being more suited for bags and pad work, and 14oz and 16oz Gloves being more ideal for Light/Heavy Sparring. This isn't a hard and fast rule, however, as body weight can also factor into your choice. If you're on the larger side, it might be worth investing in heavier gloves. Again, this isn't mandatory, though it's considered good practice if you're just getting into Muay Thai to buy some heavier gloves for safety and conditioning's sake.

Velcro or Lace?

One of the other big sticking points for Muay Thai Gloves is whether to buy velcro or lace-up sparring gloves. For beginners, it's highly recommended to use velcro gloves. They're practically sound, they are easier to put on and take off, and they also provide a little bit of extra wrist support with the velcro fastenings. Lace-up gloves, on the other hand, are a lot more snug fitting, they have a longer cuff for wrist support, and are generally considered competition or pro-focused. The drawback to lace-up gloves is that you often need a helping hand to tie your laces when you're gloved up, there are workarounds for this, but if you're just starting out, you might get a bit exasperated with the process of putting on lace gloves.
